This phenomenon raises important issues for AI reliability, enterprise adoption and user confidence. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"959\">In this article, we explain what AI hallucinations are, why they appear, their impacts, and solutions to limit them.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"964\">\n<h2 data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"1011\">What is an AI hallucination?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1176\">An <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1041\">AI hallucination<\/strong> occurs when a model generates content that appears credible, but is in fact <strong data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1173\">incorrect, invented or unverifiable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1198\">A simple example<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1480\">\n<li data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1343\">\n<p data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1343\">You ask an AI to cite a non-existent scientific study: it can invent an author, a title and even a DOI that seems realistic.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1480\">\n<p data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1480\">A medical chatbot can invent a drug that doesn&#8217;t exist, endangering a patient if the information is taken seriously.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1641\">\ud83d\udc49 The danger with hallucinations is that they are often <strong data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1589\">indiscernible to a non-expert user<\/strong>, as the AI formulates them with fluency and certainty.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1646\">\n<h2 data-start=\"243\" data-end=\"283\">Why do AIs hallucinate?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"285\" data-end=\"709\">AI hallucinations are not mere <strong data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"353\">software bugs<\/strong>: they are a direct consequence of the <strong data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"458\">way in which Large Language Models (LLMs)<\/strong> are designed and trained. These models have no real understanding of the world, and no intrinsic factual verification mechanisms. They produce text according to <strong data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"666\">statistical probabilities<\/strong>, which explains the appearance of errors.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"772\">1. Statistical generation and lack of &#8220;understanding<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"773\" data-end=\"920\">Generative AIs such as GPT, Gemini or Mistral work thanks to <strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"863\">machine learning<\/strong> and, more specifically, the <strong data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"917\">transform neural network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"1239\">\n<li data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"994\">\n<p data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"994\">Each sentence generated is a sequence of <strong data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"972\">tokens<\/strong> (pieces of words).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1125\">\n<p data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1125\">The model predicts the <strong data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1043\">most likely token<\/strong> to follow, based on billions of examples seen during training.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1239\">\n<p data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1239\">The process is optimized to produce <strong data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1215\">text that is fluid and grammatically correct<\/strong>, but not necessarily exact.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1442\">\ud83d\udc49 Example: if you ask for the biography of a little-known author, the AI can extrapolate by combining fragments of similar information and generate a <strong data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1439\">coherent but invented fake biography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1447\">\n<h3 data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1504\">2. Their sole aim is to produce text that resembles human language. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3608\" data-end=\"3754\">\n<p data-start=\"3610\" data-end=\"3754\">Without the integration of verification modules (fact-checking, RAG &#8211; Retrieval-Augmented Generation), they remain vulnerable to hallucinations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3759\">\n<p data-start=\"3761\" data-end=\"4021\">\u2705 To sum up: hallucinations are <strong data-start=\"3799\" data-end=\"3876\">a structural effect of the probabilistic operation of language models<\/strong>. As long as these do not incorporate explicit <strong data-start=\"3941\" data-end=\"3998\">factual verification and confidence calibration<\/strong> mechanisms, they will persist. <\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2645\" data-end=\"2648\">\n<h2 data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2693\">The impact of AI hallucinations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2694\" data-end=\"2790\">AI hallucinations have different consequences depending on the context in which they are used.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"2836\">1. Loss of user confidence<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2970\">If a generative AI tool regularly provides false information, users are likely to <strong data-start=\"2941\" data-end=\"2967\">doubt its reliability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2972\" data-end=\"3009\">2. They cannot be totally eliminated today, but there are several technical and organizational avenues that could <strong data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"521\">significantly reduce<\/strong> them. <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"571\">1.
