Best cancellation & Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) insurances: comparison 2026

Quick response

Cancellation guarantees reimburse non-refundable costs if you cancel for a covered reason (illness, accident, death, weather conditions). The Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) option allows you to cancel for any reason and be reimbursed 50% to 75% of prepaid costs, provided you purchase the option within 14 days of your first travel payment and cancel at least 48 hours before departure.

Grading method

  • We looked at plans offering CFAR or IFAR (Interruption For Any Reason) options, and valued those that reimburse 75% of costs.

  • We have taken into account the basic “Cancellation” cover (for illness, death of a close relative, loss of employment, etc.) as well as the interruption limits (125% to 150%).

  • Plans offering extensions due to Covid-19, epidemics or operator bankruptcy were given priority.

  • We have checked the waiting periods, maximum trip duration and exclusions (change of mind, pregnancy, acts of terrorism).

Editorial classification – cancellation/CFAR

  1. Allianz OneTrip Prime / PremierComplete package. Allianz plans offer cancellation for covered reasons (illness, bad weather, family events) and CFAR options (AllTrips Prime). Trip cancellation limits are up to $100,000, interruption up to $150,000 and evacuation up to $500,000.

  2. Travelex / Nationwide / GeneraliTravel protection. Travelex offers Ultimate plans with 75% CFAR/IFAR and high baggage coverage. Nationwide is a popular choice for cruises, with reimbursements of 100% for cancellation and 150% for interruption, and the option of adding a CFAR. Generali Premium offers generous cancellation cover, with compensation for weather-related causes or unavailability of accommodation.

  3. IMG Travel LXCFAR and IFAR options. IMG offers 75% reimbursement in CFAR andinterruption for any reason, but the option must be purchased at the same time as the policy. The advantage is that the plan also includes a “hospital of choice”, pet insurance and high coverage ($500,000 care / $1 M evacuation).

  4. Seven Corners / HTH / World TripsFlexible cancellation. Seven Corners offers 75% CFAR/IFAR, 150% refund in case of interruption and generous baggage limits. HTH offers CFAR up to 75% on its Preferred plan. World Trips offers a CFAR with a percentage varying according to the plan (Elevate or Atlas).

  5. AXA Travel / AXA SchengenVariable coverage. AXA offers CFAR plans in the USA, but not in Europe. Basic coverage includes standard cancellation (illness, accident) and repatriation from €30,000 to $1 million. We put it last because CFAR is not systematically available and the medical ceilings are lower than those of competitors.

FAQ

What is CFAR?
Cancel For Any Reason is an endorsement that allows you to cancel your trip without any justifiable reason (change of mind, fear of traveling, etc.). The policy generally reimburses 50% to 75% of non-refundable expenses, and must be purchased within 14 days of the initial deposit. Cancellation must be declared at least 48 hours before departure.

What’s the difference between cancellation and interruption?
Cancellation applies before departure: if you have to give up your trip, the insurance reimburses the costs incurred. Interruption occurs after departure and reimburses the unused portion of the trip, sometimes up to 150% to cover the return ticket.

Do CFAR plans cover pandemics?
CFAR covers all reasons, including the fear of traveling due to a pandemic. However, some plans may exclude WHO-declared epidemics. Consult the general conditions.

Do economic plans include cancellation?
Entry-level plans (OneTrip Basic, TripProtector Economy) often offer limited cancellation ($10,000) and no CFAR. To benefit from a CFAR or high limits, choose a mid-range or top-of-the-range plan.
