To appear in AI responses, content must meet a number of criteria. Here’s a checklist of 20 points:
Question > immediate answer: start each article with a short summary and three key points (answer-first approach).
Precise definitions: provide clear definitions of key concepts to facilitate extraction.
Section structuring: use informative H1/H2/H3 headings and short paragraphs.
Lists and tables: use bulleted lists and summary tables rather than long paragraphs.
Richly structured FAQ: add a FAQ section answering your audience’s questions with FAQPage markup.
Structured data (schema.org): use Article, HowTo, FAQPage, Product and LocalBusiness types.
Statistics and citations: include sourced figures and study citations to reinforce credibility.
UGC and testimonials: include user reviews and customer quotes.
Concrete examples: provide examples and comparisons to illustrate your points.
Variety of formats: combine text, tables, images and links to studies.
Consistency of local data: make sure your NAPs are identical everywhere (site, directories, GMB).
Enriched local content: for each store, add information on available products, services and specific FAQs.
Exhaustive topic coverage: consider the fan-out technique: cover different sub-issues and angles.
Freshness: update your content regularly (at least quarterly).
Competitive intelligence: compare your content with that of your competitors to identify gaps and opportunities.
Generative testing: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what they say about your brand and adjust your content accordingly.
Performance measurement: track KPIs: referred traffic, citations, ASoV, conversion rate.
Entities and terminology: optimize entity management by specifying who you are, what you do and the concepts you master (ontology).
Internal linking and meshing: link your articles together to reinforce semantic consistency.
Accessibility and UX: adopt a mobile-friendly design and high loading speed.
| Key point | Impact | Level of difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| answer first” summary | High | Low |
| FAQ with diagram | High | Medium |
| Integrated UGC | High | Medium |
| Regular updates | Medium | Medium |
| Coherence of NAPs | Medium | Medium |
| Comprehensive coverage (fan-out) | High | High |
| Measurement & ASoV | High | High |
This checklist will serve as a guide for auditing and creating AI-citable content.
To implement this checklist, it’s useful to group the points into four categories: Structure & Format, Content & Value, Local Data & UGC, and Measurement & Maintenance.
This category includes elements that facilitate extraction by AIs. Hierarchical headings (H1/H2/H3) and short paragraphs create easy-to-retrieve micro-chunks. The use of bulleted lists, tables and “answer first” summaries improves clarity and information density. A structured FAQ helps cover fan-out questions.
AI selects sources that provide value. It is therefore crucial to include verifiable statistics and study citations. Concrete examples, comparisons and case studies anchor the article in reality and help the user make a decision. Structured data (schema.org) ensures that AIs understand the context and attributes of your content.
The consistency of local data (NAP) and the richness of store pages greatly influence AI selection. Add detailed descriptions, opening hours, service information and local FAQs. UGC is a powerful lever: user reviews serve as social proof and reinforce model trust. Include customer quotes and encourage your users to leave reviews.
The checklist is only as good as its follow-up. Define KPIs (citations, ASoV, share of voice, Q→Q velocity, conversions) and track them regularly. Plan updates at least quarterly to guarantee freshness, and adapt your content to new formats and questions.
| Category | Tools/resources | Useful |
|---|---|---|
| Search for questions | AnswerThePublic, AlsoAsked, Semrush | Identify sub-questions for fan-out, create FAQs |
| SEO/GEO audit | Screaming Frog, SiteBulb, Profound | Detect unindexed pages, measure AI presence |
| Performance tracking | Google Analytics 4 (AI segmentation), BrandRadar, Profound | Measure referred traffic, ASoV and Q→Q velocity |
| Customer review management | Trustpilot, Google My Business, Yelp | Collect and distribute verified reviews |
| Schema markup | Google Structured Data Markup Helper, WordLift | Generate and validate schema tags (Article, FAQPage, Product) |
| Intelligence and monitoring | Google Alerts, Feedly, Social listening tools | Monitor brand and competitor mentions |
Inventory of existing content. List your articles, product pages, guides and FAQs. Identify strategic pages (high traffic, conversions).
Structure assessment. Check for hierarchical headings, answer first summaries, lists, tables and FAQs. Use a structure analysis tool to detect gaps.
Verification of structured data. Check the implementation of Article, FAQPage, HowTo and LocalBusiness tags. Add or correct markup.
Analysis of freshness and sources. Review publication date and update frequency. Add statistics, recent citations and links to official sources.
Review of local and UGC data. Check the consistency of NAPs, the completeness of local pages and the presence of customer reviews. Plan actions to obtain new reviews.
Performance measurement. Set up AI traffic segments in GA4, track your ASoV and compare your results with competitors. Identify the best-performing content and those in need of improvement.
Improvement plan. Set priorities according to impact and difficulty (see prioritization table). Launch update cycles, test your pages in ChatGPT/Perplexity and adjust.
By organizing your checklist in this way, you move from a static list to a process of continuous improvement. This plan helps you anchor your GEO efforts in a digital marketing routine and maximize the impact of your content.
The initial checklist covers the fundamentals, but two levers deserve particular attention: fan-out and UGC. AI engines often break down a complex query into dozens of sub-questions, which means your content needs to be thought of as collections of modular answers. When building your FAQs and lists, identify related questions likely to be asked and group them into coherent sets. For example, a guide to the “best data science courses” could be enriched with a mini-FAQ on budget, course duration, admission requirements and job opportunities. The more sub-questions you cover, the more your content will be retrievable by AI engines.
The second dimension is UGC. Integrating customer testimonials, user reviews and feedback from forums reinforces the credibility and authenticity of your pages. For an e-commerce site, consider creating review blocks for each product and displaying excerpts from these reviews in your articles. For a B2B site, solicit customer feedback (quotes, case studies) and highlight them. This content will be spotted by AI engines, which value real-life experiences to generate more nuanced responses. Finally, don’t forget to optimize your store locator by adding local mini-FAQs, photos and detailed descriptions: AI can then recommend your business in a geolocalized query.
